I have been traveling through this vibrant country for nearly 20 years. As part of my passion for India, I have learned about all the wonderful secrets it has in store.  I want to share that knowledge with you, placing its complex history, culture, and religions in context, explaining key customs and behaviors, and answering any questions that pop up along the way. Despite leaving on Friday, you will be arriving late Saturday or early Sunday (usually around 1:00 am). We are flying half way around the globe and even though it seems we are losing a day, you will eventually get this time back on the return flight. After the arrival, we need half a day to recover and adjust. We will gather later this evening for a group dinner and orientation. Tomorrow, we are off for a wonderful adventure!

Today we will see some of the main highlights of the city of Mumbai. We begin with a walk past the Mumbai Taj Tower, one of the most iconic buildings in the city. Next we will visit the Gateway of India, built in 1924 to welcome King George V and Queen Mary to Mumbai. We will explore the area and then stop for lunch at the Peshwari style Delhi Darbar restaurant. After a tasty break, we’ll walk to the Prince of Wales Museum, which is a Victorian era museum located in the Kala Ghoda Arts District. Following our visit, we’ll return to the hotel to refresh and enjoy a relaxed dinner at the hotel buffet.

Today we visit Mani Bhavan, which is the former home and center of political activity for Ghandi in Bombay (Mumbai) during the 19 years he ruled. Following our first stop, we will visit Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, and UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will enjoy a walk through Crawford Market, one of the most famous in Mumbai. Here you can find nearly anything your heart desires, but be sure to buy some Indian clothing as tonight we will enjoy dinner at the upscale Flavors Restaurant and Buffet in the Ambassador Hotel.

DAY 4: ancient buddhist caves

Today, we bid Mumbai farewell and depart for an off-the-beaten-path adventure in the Maharashtra country side on our way to Pune. Along the way, we will stop at Bhaja and Karla Buddha Caves, as well as the Ekvira Devi Temple, which date back to 1st and 2nd century BC.  These are some of the oldest Buddhist sites in the country. Many of the temples are surrounded by waterfalls, pristinely preserved by worshippers from the local community. These are considered some of the most important sites in Indian archeology due to their construction, images of early instruments and mythological creatures, and their significance to the Buddhist religion.

Day 5: sites of pune

Pune, while considered a modern “science” city and university town, also has a rich history that will take you back centuries in time. We start our day at the 8th century Pataleshwar Cave Temple, making our way through the city to the 19th century Aga Khan Palace, once prison to Mahatma Gandhi and the location of his ashes to this day. We’ll scale the 103 steps to the Parvati Hill temple complex before capping our day with a visit to the Shaniwar Wada Fortress, the center of pre-colonial Indian politics in the 18th century.

Today we explore the local countryside. Only a short drive from Pune, we will learn about an emerging industry in Indian wine making at the Four Seasons Winery. After touring the grounds we’ll enjoy lunch on the estate. On our return from the local wine region, we will make a stop at the 12th-century Bhuleshwar Temple to visit the magnificent carvings of the Hindu temple of Shiva constructed to look like a mosque to preserve it from Islamic invaders. Time permitting, we will also make a stop at the Dagdusheth Halwai Ganapati Temple, dedicated to the Hindu god, Ganesh.

Today we will fly via Delhi to Agra, home of the Taj Mahal. India’s Capital until 1638, Agra boasts enormous monuments, world-renowned temples and exquisite 16th-century architecture that will leave you in awe. If you consider yourself a world traveler, you are bound to make the pilgrimage to Agra. The Taj Mahal is without a doubt the most iconic building in all of India. After a brief stop at the hotel to refresh, we will make our way to this UNESCO World Heritage Site to see the Taj during sunset, which once again will leave us breathless. Rounding up the day, we enjoy a scrumptious gourmet dinner in the good company of our group.

We start the day with a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Red Fort, former imperial residence of the Mughal Dynasty. We’ll spend the afternoon visiting Agra’s markets. Before heading out, we will stop for lunch in the hustle and bustle of Agra City. We then head out by bus to Jaipur, the capital of India’s Rajasthan state. After check-in, Tabitha will invite everyone for dinner and a conversation about what we have learned so far and what still lies ahead.

Today we embark via air-conditioned bus for a day peppered with World Heritage Sites, forts and monuments, deepening our understanding of India, mingling with locals, and learning on site. We will discover Jaigarh and Amber Fort, by elephant! Then, we will marvel at the Jantar Mantal monument, the City Palace, Hawa Manhal Palace, and Jal Mahal Palace. Tabitha and local guides will bring history alive, deliver context, and understanding of this amazing Islamic city and its impressive past.

It is hard to say goodbye to Jaipur, so we take one more morning to explore. Tabitha will take us to the city center, soaking up northern India’s ambience. This afternoon we are headed south to the second largest city in India –Delhi. After lunch, we will board our bus and enjoy the sites along the way. Tabitha will take you to Old Delhi to visit the traditional shops and markets. We will visit the largest mosque in the region – Jama Masjid. We finish the day with a walk to Parikrama The Revolving Restaurant for dinner. This restaurant offers 360 degrtee views of the city and is a great way to see the juxtaposition of modern and ancient India!

The world-renowned and massive Lahori Gate and the Red Fort are the first highlights this morning. Marvel at ancient architecture dating back to 1,000 BC. Enjoy elevated street food and local cuisine at vibrant markets surrounded by treasured temples. Soak up Delhi’s rich, historic past. The next highlight will be a rickshaw ride up to Jama Masjid, followed by a sunset visit to the Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple. It is the photographer’s dream come true!

day 12: Qutub Minar & Lotus Temple

Prepare to immerse yourself in the full range of rich and diverse Indian culture. We start with a morning visit to the Qutub Minar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which dates to around 1200 AD and is one of the oldest examples of Arabesque architecture in the region. We round out the day with an afternoon visit to The Lotus Temple, a breathtaking $10 million-dollar Baha’i temple with a view of Delhi. This evening, we will begin the pre-celebrations of Holi, including the Holika Dahan celebration – so don’t forget your Holika dolls. Then, come prepared to have some fun.  We will be celebrating our last night together in India at the Hard Rock Café – Delhi.

Holi is a spring festival that celebrates renewed beginnings among other things.  Holi is celebrated in India at the beginning of Spring at the first full moon of the Hindu calendar, but some regions celebrate the event during the week leading up to the Holi festivities. After breakfast, we will start the morning by enjoying the local sounds and sight of the holiday. By afternoon, we will return to our hotel to clean up and continue the celebration at a Farewell Dinner near the hotel.

  • Each detour includes the price of all admissions to sights seen as a group; tours by local guides, meals as listed in the trip itinerary; accommodations each night of the detour including breakfasts; all transportation required for group activities from the first hotel to the last hotel of the detour (transportation for optional group activities and independent travel during the detour is not included), travel consultations and advice from our staff, guides, and vendors including suggestions, tips, and directions, and all trip leader, local guide, driver, and hotel tips. Prices do not include airfare to and from the detour, nor ground transportation to/from airports.

  • Detour prices do not include international airfare or ground transportation to/from the airport.

  • Each detour includes all breakfasts and about half of your lunches and dinners as indicated in the meal guide included in each itinerary: B=breakfast, L=lunch, D=dinner.

  • Our groups range from 10-20 participants with 1-2 trip leaders and local guides to connect us to local culture and experiences.

  • Yes! Our detours are the perfect way for children (and adults) to learn in action. We welcome and celebrate multi-generational travel. History class was never so fun!

  • We will meet at our hotel in Mumbai after we’ve had a good rest from our travels and start our day exploring.

  • Please plan to fly into Mumbai and out of Delhi.

  • Although we fly out on February 28, our flight does not arrive until early (around 1 am) the morning of March 2. We have reserved hotel rooms for you to rest and recover from your travels so that we can start our adventures later in the day March 2 refreshed and recharged!

  • Each trip page has a “book now” button that links to our online registration and payment system. There you can pay the 10% per person deposit and choose to pay in installments or to pay the full amount.

  • Deposits are refundable for 30 days from receipt. After 30 days they are nonrefundable.

  • Final payment is due 90 days prior to detour commencement but you may pay in full any time prior to this.

  • Cancellations are allowed without penalty (excepting deposit) until the final payment deadline. After the final payment deadline 100% of funds paid are nonrefundable.

  • Each trip page has a “book now” button that links to our online registration and payment system. There you can pay the 10% per person deposit and choose to pay in installments or to pay the full amount.

  • Yes, all published prices are per person, based on double occupancy, or when available, single occupancy. Please contact us for triple occupancy pricing.

  • During the registration process you will have the opportunity to request single occupancy, if it is offered. Due to the boutique nature of our hotels, we are not always able to offer single accommodations, but are happy to pair you with another single traveler.

  • Yes. You must be able to carry your own luggage up at least three flights of stairs and on uneven ground for up to a quarter mile.

  • Dressler Detours are physically demanding. To enjoy the experience, you must be in good walking shape. The most active days may average 5 miles of walking (often over uneven surfaces and including lots of climbing/steps), lots of standing while listening to your guide during group sightseeing, and possibly stair-climbing while carrying your own bag up to your hotel room. We’ve included an activity guide for each day of our itinerary: light=mostly sedentary, moderate=walking 1-3 miles on mostly even ground, strenuous=walking 3+ miles on hills/uneven ground.
